A Persistent Beaver, Power Outages, and Winter Survival Tips and Gear

Do you look at preparedness as an overwhelming task and feel lost as to where to start? You’re not alone. I think we all feel that way a little. Creek, over at Willow Haven Outdoor, has some great advice he learned from a beaver – just chip away at it a little bit at a time. He’s speaking specifically about building a Bug Out Bag, but I think it applies to prepping in general. Do a little bit over time and before you know it you’ll be more prepared that 99.9% of the general population.

Could you endure a power outage for 24 hours? It’s a question Kellene(Preparedness Pro) and her family put to a test over one 24 hour period. They took on the challenge with others in their neighborhood and learned some valuable lessons. One lesson that several of the families learned was that their light sources weren’t as bright as they would have liked. This and other valuable lessons are priceless because so few of us ever actually put our preps to the test. Do a test yourself, or at least go read and learn from others.

Speaking of power outages, Tactical Intelligence has a great post about 5 essential pieces of gear to get you comfortably through a winter power outage. A few years ago he experienced a week long power outage and decided to tough it out. He eventually packed it up and headed to his Dad’s place but not before learning from his experience. As he puts it, “It’s not just about surviving, but thriving in tough times.” Fast forward 3 years and another winter storm knocks out his power. Was he able to thrive this time or just survive? Go find out what gear made all the difference.

Survival Food, Christmas Gifts for Preppers, End of the Year To Do List, and Shocking Videos

PreppingToSurvive.com reached a mini milestone recently with their 200th post and highlight their top five most popular posts. One of their top five posts is Knowing What Food To Buy. The whole survival food topic is intriguing to me for a number of reasons, not the least of which is how much food in storage is enough, and how in the world do you budget for food preparations with food costs skyrocketing. I’ve been meaning to put together a curated post covering all things related to survival food and storage but haven’t found the time yet.

It’s that time of year again, the season we celebrate the birth of our savior. Christmas has become pretty much everything except celebrating the birth of Jesus. Just take a look at these 10 Most Shocking Videos from Black Friday.

A few years ago I went to a big mall a couple of days before Christmas for some last minute shopping. That was the last time. I do most of my Christmas shopping at Amazon and L.L. Bean. Stumped for what to give this Christmas? Off Grid Survival has a great idea – The Gift of Preparedness. Backdoor Survival also has a good list of Holiday Gifts for the Prepper in Your Life.

Another great gift idea is long term food. I’ve bought from Nitro-Pak before and was pleased with their prices. Destiny Survival recommends them as well with several reasons to buy your preps from Nitro-Pak. If you need some ideas for what items to purchase head over to Backdoor Survival and take a look at their list of 24 food items they would choose.

I’ll finish off this post with a reminder that the end of the year is fast approaching. Code Name Insight made a great list of 50 things to do between now and the end of the year. I’m trying to do a lot more of #50. We all have lots to be thankful for.
